Aula Simfonia: Pass with Good Grades
At last Indonesia paved its own way to build a representative concert hall. With 1227 seats capacity, Aula Simfonia Jakarta stamds in Kemayoran, at north side of Jakarta. Privately funded, this hall is the answer of so many people in Jakarta who long for a representative yet acoustically fine concert hall.
Aula Simfonia's interior is dominated in brown coloured, fully furnished wood which excels in reverberation and warm sound reflection. With fully filled hall, the sound is quite balanced almost all over the concert hall between the high frequency and also low frequency sound. The mould of sound is very solid yet still gives way for the ‘ringing’ of each sound made at the stage.
Aula Simfonia Jakarta is also the only one concert hall in Jakarta that includes a large pipe organ with 3 in it, making it the only concert hall in Jakarta to stage an organ concerto which will be held in 23rd and 24th October. We can say that those days will be the very day Indonesia will hear an organ concerto played on a pipe organ in a concert hall.
Stephen Tong, the architect, also designed this hall with stage as the focal point, which made possible all spectators face the stage directly. Tong also filled the hall with baroque style golden statues and also the pictures of famed composers which remind us of major symphonic halls both in Moscow and Vienna.
All to say, Aula Simfonia Jakarta passed with good grades acoustically and furbished uniquely.
Opening Concert
Sunday is the second day of Inauguration Concert. Jessie Chang with Jahja Ling shone brightly that evening. Performing the ‘Emperor’ Piano Concerto, Jessie Chang played superbly, strong in character yet controlled in every aspect of her piano playing. Lush colors also the strong point of her poignant performance.
Jahja Ling as always is stunning. Grabbing the attention of the orchestra, he managed to deliver a convincing interpretation of Beethoven 5th piano concerto. Orchestra was crisp, temperamental, and attentive with a touch of flexibility and sweetness.
The Magnificat by JS Bach was presented to showcase the hall’s ability to house the grandeur of music. Throng of choristers filled the stage, and was led by the architect and project initiator himself, Stephen Tong. The goal was met by the 100 or so Jakarta Oratorio Singers and hall’s main pipe organ continuo, but it also sacrificed the clarity and precision of the entire work due to its big and heavy approach.
Dan Decker was a fine baroque tenor, providing all the necessities of baroque music, light, agility and inevitable focus. Chen Yong Chen, Anna Koor and Elsa Pardosi all played a significant role in the cantata. Soprano Huang Wei showed her beautiful instrument through bel canto singing which is quite a unique approach to Bach’s music which some may find it unsuitable.
Jakarta at last has its own concert hall. Moreover, Aula Simfonia Jakarta concert hall will continue to evolve and finally reached its full potential in both quality and also perseverance. And now let us observe how this very hall will affect Jakarta’s own fine arts activities.
